CAMERA OBSCURA | ABELARDO MORELL

Super inspirational.
Work is by Abelardo Morell. This is his awesome website below with beautiful astonishing images:

http://www.abelardomorell.net/photography/cameraobsc_01/cameraobsc_01.html

WHO?
Born 1948, Havana, Cuba and is a Boston-based photographer. Morell and his family fled Cuba in 1962, moving to New York City. Morell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bowdoin College in 1977, and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Art in 1981.

Morell is well known in the photographic community for creating camera obscura images in various places around the world and photographing these. Morell was awarded the Cintas Foundation fellowship in 1992 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 1993.

Morell is currently a professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art. He is represented by Bonni Benrubi Gallery, NYC.
A documentary on elements of Morell's life and work, Shadow of the House, was released in 2007. (*Text from Wikipedia)

MY THOUGHTS...
Making use of a natural phenomenon, Morell transforms spaces in private, hotel or function rooms into giant camera obscuras. He does this by covering all the windows and doors from natural light but leaving a tiny hole for some to pass through and nature automatically does its magic.

The experience in a room like that tips you over the edge with its projections of the outside world on the walls of the very room, upside down! It is a surreal experience that leaves one fascinated with your extenal surroundings right inside the room. It is a direct representation of reality that engulfs the whole room and uses that space as a frame. This projects us into the notion of reality and fiction, and almost immediately blurs these boundaries. These installations have an effective use of space, texture and evoking the senses to a greater height. That's truely a designed experience!!!

Kinder Surprise!

Was reading an interesting post about... Kinder Eggs, haha.
I haven't looked recently but I hear from some distraught people that Kinder Eggs don't come like they used to anymore (at least not in Singapore).

But anyway, this article discusses the product as a designed experience—purchasing the chocolate egg, eating away at the outer layer to get to the toy inside (which one is the primary objective, I wonder?) and finally finding the distinctive yellow pill-like container which houses the toy that requires you to follow instructions to build. The article likens the experience to that of a Matryoshka doll, or Russian doll as is more commonly known.

Hmm now I feel like having a Kinder Egg.

Orange Day Ing-A-Thing

Hello Everyone!

as you know, this coming Tuesday is Orange Day :-)

Bernadette and I have confirmed the venue to be at The Sunken Plaza in ADM.
Everyone should wear orange, brown or beige solid colored clothes, avoid prints if possible.
Also avoid long pants or long sleeved tops. We'll need your hands and feet to be 'free'.
Bring along a pair of sunglasses and be prepared to get a little messy ;-)

Looking forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday!

Regards, Lynn & Bernadette

Flash mob in Raffles Place

HOW COOL IS THIS?!?! No idea who started it, how they did the music that loudly (probably the big newscasting screens up on the side of the buildings), who joined, how they joined, etc. Will try to find out!

Sound Of Color

Anyone heard of the 'Sound of Color' project by GAP?

Well basically (and I quote) five bands were commissioned to write five songs based on five different colors. Five directors then shot music videos of each song/color. Below is the color Red (since Red day is up next) done by Dntel. If anyone has heard of the band The Postal Service, he's part of it.

Anyhow, translating color into "sound" or music has always been rather interesting to me – though some of the songs don't quite agree with my feel of that color (you can check out the rest on Youtube, I especially like this one on yellow by Marie Digby).

I thought the Red song and video were quite accurate portrayals, especially the constant pulsating projections which really give the feeling of impulsiveness, emotion, heartbeat etc etc.....
